Narrows Encounter
While hiking through the Zion Narrows, I came across something I never expected. As I came around one of the bends, a large male mule deer was foraging on the river bank. We both noticed each other immmediately, and since I was a safe distance away from him, he didn't run away. I quickly unpacked my camera and slowly started to approach him. Having tried this technique before, I soon realized I was just going to scare him away. So, I backed off and sat on a rock. After a few moments, his curiosity got the better of him, and he began to approach me to find out what I was. He came within 100 feet, and for several minutes he used all his senses to discern me. After discovering what I was, he turned and headed up river. I never saw him the rest of the day.
